A project intended to improve conditions for endangered fish could mean essentially emptying Detroit Lake for one or two years. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to build a foot tower and floating screen at Detroit Dam to improve water temperature and fish passage for salmon and steelhead in the North Santiam River. The Corps is taking public comment on the project until January From Native Fish Society: Throughout the Pacific Northwest, dams have altered streamflow and water temperatures, impounded water over historic habitat, and prevented fish from migrating freely to the ocean and back to their homewaters.

As their presence has increasingly put threatened and endangered fish in jeopardy, engineers have tried to design work-arounds including fish ladders, truck and haul programs, selective water withdrawal towers, juvenile downstream barging, and even a salmon cannon!

The Rocking Chair is marked by an access from the south side of the lake, where a person could walk down from a parking area to the lake and sit a rocking chair on the level bank there, sit and watch the lake.

Just before you get to the MDC boat ramp access north side of the lake , the lake gets deeper and narrower, hugging the north bank. At the bottom of this stretch, the lake again changes sides creating a long chute with gravel bottom. Trophy Run is a development on the south side of the lake marked by a community building.

A surprise partial skunking on a little mountain stream By Troutnut on July 31st, I had some nice fishing for pretty little westslope cutts the other night, but first I got mysteriously skunked on a couple stretches of the same stream that should have been really good. I don’t mind a couple hours of “fishing instead of catching,” but it is an interesting puzzle to be solved. I had an interesting experience yesterday evening July 31st fishing a very small stream on the east slope of the Cascades above 3, feet.

When I was there for the first time eight days earlier, I was catching a pretty little westslope cutt or five in every likely-looking pool and pocket. Yesterday, fishing adjacent reaches at the exact same time of day, under similar weather conditions, I saw no sign of any trout. Not so much as a fingerling nipped at my fly, and no shadows darted away when I waded into a pool.

Most of them are in the lb range. Fish to 10 lbs are still a possibility on any given day. Unlike most coastal steelhead rivers, where one or two fish would be a banner day, the Feather often gives up multiple fish during the peak season.

The White River is back in shape. With colder weather in the past few days, we saw the color of the White significantly improve yesterday afternoon and it seems to be holding strong with clearer water that is not having any impact on the condition of the Deschutes below its confluence with the White River. Steelhead fishing has continued to be challenging due to low returns this year, but you are bound to find a player if you keep your fly in the water long enough.

Water temps are between 49 degrees and 52 degrees, depending on the time of day and where you are on the river. The water is warmer the further upstream you go because it appears that the water is being released into the Deschutes from the top of the reservoir. People coming into the shop during the period of time that the White River was blown out last week were complaining that the visibility in the river above the White was also poor and that the river had a brownish-green color to it with turbidity.

I don’t know if that has improved much, but I will update further on conditions after speaking with my guides who are out on the water today. So, knowing that the water temps are what they are, John Hazel says that he sticks with floating lines on the Deschutes until water temps are below 50 degrees. Therefore, we are on the verge of transitioning into sink tips on the Deschutes.

As for fly selection, I prefer to fish small flies on the Deschutes unless the visibility is poor and I have to show them something big in order for them to see it through the mud. By small, I mean size 3 or 5 hair wing patterns or muddlers on size 4 hooks. Because steelhead fishing has been tough, you may want to bring a trout rod when you come out to the Deschutes.

Trout fishing has been pretty darn good lately, as I have written in previous reports. As temperatures drop into the 40s the trout typically move into the slower pools and back eddies, so think like a trout trying to conserve energy when looking for trout water.
