Overview The stomach protrudes from the mouth of a barotrauma-impacted black rockfish. Anglers can reduce mortality in rockfish by employing deepwater release techniques. Fishery Concerns and Solutions. Rockfish caught in deep water often sustain injuries — referred to as barotrauma — caused by rapid decompression and expansion of gases in the swim bladder. Fish that are released with inflated swim bladders cannot resubmerge and will die. Because of high release mortality, intentional catch-and-release fishing is greatly discouraged, particularly in depths of 60 feet or greater. Alaska anglers can best prevent wasteful rockfish mortality by avoiding waters where unwanted catches are likely.

King Salmon range from 20 to 60 pounds and up. We target these feeder Kings for eight to ten weeks at the beginning of the season until the Silver Coho Salmon start to show up. We fish for King Salmon by trolling, with the boat moving at low speed, drawing lines through the water at different depths, dressed with lures or bait. The limit for these wild ocean King Salmon is one or two per person per day, depending on the area fished.
Fishing for Coho Salmon, known in Seward, Alaska as “Silver Salmon”, is some of the most exciting sports fishing on light tackle. Their ravenous feeding throughout the season pushes their weight to 15 pounds or more by late summer. These feisty, acrobatic silver bullets often dart at high speeds and leap up and out of the water only to splash back down to challenge you once again to the fight of a lifetime. We commonly get two, three, four, or more Salmon on simultaneously, though hooking a silver is only part of the battle.
Getting these fish netted and into the boat before they shake your hook is an even greater challenge.

Email King Salmon King salmon onchorhynchus tshawytscha , known also as Chinook salmon, truly are the king of all salmon species in Alaska. Though distributed nearly state-wide, they particularly dominate the saltwater sport fishing roster as the most sought-after species available from Southeast Alaska into Prince William Sound, out to the Kodiak-Afognak island group and into the Bristol Bay area. Kings are also high on the list for river anglers, as their large size and powerful runs make for some of the most exhilarating freshwater fishing in Alaska.
Finally, they dominate the salmon market and the dinner table, being rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Any way you look at it, the king is a highly sought-after fish among Alaska anglers. Distribution Kings are found from the California coast all the way to the Chukchi Sea, however sport anglers commonly encounter them in Southeast Alaska north to the Bristol Bay area.
Freshwater angling for kings is popular in some Southeast streams, most notably the Taku and Stikine rivers. Farther north they are commonly pursued on tributaries to the Copper River, with the Gulkana receiving most of the action. Southcentral Alaska has historically had excellent runs of kings, however in recent years numbers have dwindled. These rivers all involve flying out of Anchorage, as there is no road access.
The “Fishing Hole” on the Homer Spit, offers a shot at planted kings that return to the lagoon there in the summer months. Tactics for Saltwater Kings Kings are aggressive feeders along Alaska’s coast, and can be caught using any of several boat-based or shore-based methods. Be geared up for all possibilities and don’t be afraid to change tactics if one method doesn’t produce after an hour or so.
